Laws are absolutely essential for the healthy functioning of a society. It provides people with a list of guidelines for acceptable conduct without which said society would crumble into anarchy (a state of disorder due to absence or non-recognition of authority or other controlling systems) and dissonance (lack of agreement or harmony between people or things). However, here is a list of laws around the world which are...well...peculiar.

·  Get rid of that frown!
In Milan, Italy, it is illegal for people to frown in public unless he/she is attending a funeral or is at a hospital. In fact, a pretty heavy fine might be levied on you if you are caught frowning in public. I guess that’s one way to prevent the dreaded frown lines!

·  No kissing on the train.
In France, it is illegal to kiss on trains. However, it is allowed on the railway stations as long as it is done before the train arrives at the station. And here I thought that France was called the country of love.

·  Stop that chicken from crossing the road!
Why did the chicken cross the road? Quitman, Georgia in the United States doesn’t care because they’ve made it illegal for chickens to cross the road there.

·  Bad singers are not allowed.
It is illegal to sing off-key in North Carolina. Bad singers are advised to keep their autotunes at max at all times if they ever find themselves in North Carolina.

·  I’m sorry sir, but you cannot bring your lion inside.
In Baltimore, Maryland, bringing a lion with you inside a cinema hall is prohibited. Oh no, I guess my pet lion will just have to watch the latest Star Wars at home.

·  No cactus deforestation in Arizona.
Cutting down a saguaro cactus in Arizona can result in a hefty fine along with up to 25 years of prison time. Cactus cruelty is strictly forbidden there.

·  No smoking, especially if you’re a monkey.
It is illegal for monkeys to smoke in South Bend, Indiana. In fact, in 1924, a chimp was arrested, tried, and fined for $5 for smoking a cigarette as part of a circus act.

·  Need to use the loo? Please come on in.
A law in Scotland mandates that its citizens must allow someone into their house if they call at their door needing to use the bathroom. Scottish Robber: Write that down, lads!

·  Can’t run out of juice on the highway.
This German law states that one cannot run out of petrol/diesel while driving on the autobahn, the German controlled-access highway. Fines can range from €30 to €70 depending on the case.

·  Can’t ride your cow whilst you are drunk.
In Scotland, it is illegal to ride a cow while you are under the influence of alcohol. I guess the police would ticket you under RUI(Riding Under the Influence)?

·  No swearing, please!
You better be careful if you’ve got a potty mouth because it is illegal to swear in the United Arab Emirates. It can lead to a pretty hefty fine, imprisonment, or deportation. It doesn’t just cover swearing out loud, but it also extends to text messages, social media posts, and general obscene physical gestures as well.

All of these laws might look ridiculous at first glance but most of them have some kind of background for their enactment. For e.g., the law that prohibits cutting down saguaro cactus in Arizona stems from the fact that saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) is endemic (native to a particular place) to Arizona and is classified as an endangered species. They also take a long time to grow, ranging from 50-100 years.
