Festival & Holidays

This year Guru Purnima will be celebrated on 3rd of July, Sunday. It is a day of celebration for millions of Hindus, all over the world. On the day of Ashada Shukla Paksha Panchami, Guru Purnima is celebrated every year. Check out some interesting facts about the day.

This day marks the tradition of celebrating teachers and gurus. On this day, Hindu people worship and take blessings from their teachers. This is a significant tradition that has been going on since the vedic times.

The word Guru has two syllables. If we break the syllables to ‘Gu’ and ‘Ru’, in Sanskrit it will mean something like this - ‘Gu’ stands for darkness, ‘Ru’ stands for remover. So a Guru is a person who removes the darkness of ignorance from the minds of their pupils.

Guru Purnima also marks the birth anniversary of famous Indian guru Vyasa. He was the great author of Indian Mahakavya - Mahabharata. He is also the author of several other Hindu Scriptures. So this day is also known as Vyasa Purnima.

Vyasa is also known as Ved Vyasa in the Indian tradition. It is because he had compiled all the four ancient Vedas for the use of common people. Without his efforts, today we would not be aware of the knowledge of the Vedas.

According to Hindu belief, the three figures - Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva - are considered the primordial gurus of the Universe. They are considered responsible for maintaining the balance of the entire Universe. So in a way, Guru Purnima also celebrates this celestial trio.

With this I would like to wish you all, a very happy Guru Purnima !

In the Indian Tradition, Gurus are not just academic teachers. They are the spiritual guides to their pupils.
