When did the festival begin?
The annual Monkey Buffet began in Lopburi city in 1989. The city inhabits a huge population of monkeys who interact and coexist in harmony with the people of the city. Lopburi is also known as the ‘Monkey City’ of Thailand.
How is the festival initiated?
Since one week before the festival, the locals pass out invitations to the Lopburi Macaques with attached cashews as a small incentive. They even roll out red carpet for their furry friends to come and take part in the festival.
How is the festival celebrated?
The festival takes place in the ruins of 13th-century Phra Prang Sam Yot Temple. The opening ceremony comprises humans dressed in monkey suits, dancing and singing and drawing the monkeys to the venue. After that the people participate in vibrant musicals and dance performances, highlighting the richness of Thai culture. There are also contests and fun displays giving the festival a carnival vibe.
